Komplementärkontrast
Der Komplementärkontrast entsteht durch zwei Farben, die sich im Farbkreis direkt gegenüberliegen. Dabei leitet sich der Begriff davon ab, dass sich beim Mischen zweier Komplementärfarben immer ein Grauwert ergibt, die Farben löschen sich gegenseitig praktisch aus. Der Komplementärkontrast nutzt die Leuchtkraft jeder Farbe. Sie stehen nicht in Konkurrenz zueinander, sondern jede kann ihre besondere Wirkung entfalten. Häufig wird der Komplementärkontrast gar nicht einzeln genutzt, sondern ist Bestandteil einer umfassenderen Komposition, in der die Komplementärfarben zusätzlich in stark unterschiedlicher Menge (Mengen-Kontrast) oder ihr zwangsläufig einhergehender Kalt-warm-Kontrast genutzt wird. Die Erfahrung zeigt, dass Komplementärkontraste am stärksten mit den sechs Grundfarben wirken.

Mengen-Kontrast
Stark unterschiedliche Mengenanteile von Farben bilden schon von sich aus einen starken Kontrast. Ein kleiner roter Punkt inmitten eines großen blauen Umfeldes wird, ganz gleich wie klein er auch ist, die ganze Aufmerksamkeit des Betrachters auf sich ziehen. Die nur minimal vorhandene Farbe setzt damit einen umso stärkeren Akzent. Das eignet sich ausgezeichnet, um Symbolen zu mehr Aufmerksamkeit zu verhelfen.
